The Mind Over Matter Triathlon was founded in 2023 as an annual event to raise money and awareness for brain cancer research. 2025 will be the 3rd year of the event, and will take place at Coconut Cove RV Resort in Hazel Green, WI. This USA Triathlon-sanctioned event will include a youth race (ages 6-15) on Saturday, June 28th at noon, and a sprint and olympic-distance race on Sunday, June 29th at 8 am. The race is perfect for beginners and veterans alike, featuring a calm lake swim, a hilly bike through the beautiful Wisconsin countryside, and a hilly run that finishes with an optional slip n slide through the finish line! It also has a relay option and aquabike (swim-bike only) option.
All the money raised from this event goes directly to glioblastoma research at the University of Iowa. The first two years of the event have raised a combined total of over $20,000, and we look to improve on that this year!
The founder and race director of this event is Olivia (Liv) Dietzel, a professional triathlete from southwest Wisconsin. Her father, Dennis Dietzel, was treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics during his 6.5 year battle with glioblastoma (GBM). Liv got into the sport of triathlon initially to spend bonding time with her father who loved recreational cycling. She did her first Ironman in 2019 as her first fundraiser for brain cancer research. This initial Mind Over Matter fundraiser raised over $40,000 for brain cancer research at the University of Iowa. After her father lost his battle with this terrible disease in 2020, she decided to dedicate her racing and training to him and raising money for the cause. This new “why” led to quick and significant improvement and she went pro in triathlon in 2023. Since 2019, Mind Over Matter fundraisers have raised a total of $67,897 for brain cancer research.
