The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Genetics at the University of Iowa is celebrating its 50th anniversary in June 2025. The program began with seven primary faculty members and has grown to include 76 faculty and 40 students across four colleges and 16 academic departments, with nearly 200 alumni. The program’s mission is to train a diverse cohort of graduate students in the broad discipline of genetics, including foundational research, computational genetics, and medical genetics. This training equips students with the knowledge and skills to pursue careers in academia, the scientific industry, policy, and scientific writing, and to educate society, which will increasingly need to understand the implications of their own genomes.
For this special anniversary, the program directors are inviting former and current faculty members, students, and friends of the program to support student success through contributions that will fund travel fellowships and external seminar speaker sponsorships.
NOTICE: The University of Iowa Center for Advancement is an operational name for the State University of Iowa Foundation, an independent, Iowa nonprofit corporation organized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, publicly supported charitable entity working to advance the University of Iowa. Dear alumni, current members, and friends of the Genetics Program:
Thanks to your incredible generosity, we have reached 90% of our fundraising goal in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Genetics!
Our recent Anniversary Celebration and Annual Student Retreat was a meaningful reflection on five decades of training, mentorship, and discovery—and a reminder of how much this community has accomplished together.
Now, with just a little more time to go, you can help push us over the finish line. Your gift—of any amount—will directly support student travel fellowships and the Current Topics in Genetics seminar series, ensuring future trainees benefit from the same opportunities that shaped so many of your own careers.
🎯 Help us reach 100% of our goal before the campaign closes on July 31!
Thank you again for being part of our program’s past—and future.
With gratitude from the Genetics administration team,
Lori L. Wallrath, PhD, Director
Bryan Phillips, PhD, Associate Director
Rob DuBay, Program Administrator
Sydney Schmeltz, Program Associate
