Dear alumni, friends, and colleagues,
We want to tell you about an exciting fundraiser for the University of Iowa Latino/Native American Cultural Center (LNACC). Dr. Rusty Barcelo – one of the founders of the cultural center - and Dr. Adele Lozano will be riding in RAGBRAI on July 22nd through the 29th to raise funds for the Latino Native American Cultural Center (LNACC). Rusty and Adele will be riding 500 miles from Sioux City, Iowa, to Davenport, Iowa, with Consuelo Garcia providing rider support during the ride.
The LNACC was founded in 1973 by a group of Chicano and Indigenous students with a goal of providing a home away from home where students could experience a sense of community and belonging through food, music, language, literature, advocacy, and community outreach. Since then, as the Native American and Latino student populations on campus have grown, the LNACC has been instrumental in providing academic, cultural, social, and leadership opportunities to support the success of University of Iowa students. So many students have passed through this door who are now educators, scholars, authors, engineers, doctors, attorneys, social workers, higher ed practitioners, and more! And the LNACC has been the lodestar providing cultural nourishment while validating students as producers of knowledge.
Funds will support student scholarships, educational and leadership programming, preserve the history and artifacts of the UI LNACC at the University of Iowa Archives, and support the building fund for the new LNACC Multicultural Student Center which will be located in the heart of the UI campus on Hubbard Green Park across from the Iowa Memorial Union.
This ride will kick off the beginning of a year of fundraising events for the LNACC. We would be honored to have you join us on our RAGBRAI journey. All you need to do is sit back and enjoy the ride while we do the work. We will send you photos and updates as we make our way on this 500-mile journey. Your support is critical to bringing this fundraising drive to fruition and ensuring that welcoming spaces continue to be available to support Indigenous and Latinx students.
Thank you for your donation to support the LNACC and of course, your donation is 100% tax-deductible.
