About

Located on the University of Iowa campus next to the picturesque Iowa river, the Materials Analysis, Testing, and Fabrication (MATFab) Facility is the central instrumentation hub for University of Iowa scientists, engineers and researchers.

Launched in 2019, our facility’s mission is to empower innovation and discovery in science and engineering by providing advanced fabrication and characterization of natural and engineered materials

The development of advanced materials is critical to advancing our high-tech economy. At MATFab, we enable the discovery of new knowledge in a wide range of fields, including creating dental coatings for cavity mitigation, fabrication of gratings for satellites, predicting volcanic eruption events, drug discovery, sensors for cancer research, and detection of trace metals in inks.

Our facility is staffed by a team of professional scientists with backgrounds in chemistry, engineering, geoscience, and the physical sciences, who work with faculty researchers from a wide range of disciplines.

In addition to helping fulfill the research mission of the University, we are committed to facilitating transformative experiences that prepare students for success in our global economy. This GOLDrush campaign will help us expand our workforce development initiatives to train the next generation of professionals who work with cutting-edge STEM technologies.

Through an expanded undergraduate internship program and a graduate professional development program, students will receive training on sophisticated instrumentation at MATFab that enables them to enter the workforce with advanced technological skills. These training opportunities translate into strong job placement rates in major companies in the IT and aerospace industries.

Your support will help the University of Iowa be leader in training the advanced technical workforce required for the future.
