Iowa is home to diverse communities of essential workers. Our meatpacking, food processing, and agricultural workers play a critical role in global food supply. Our manufacturing workers are leaders in producing high-quality aluminum, farm implement, and avionics equipment. Our construction workers are building resilient communities and the clean energy infrastructure of our future. Our public sector workers deliver world-class health care, education, and services.
However, too many workers in Iowa continue to experience preventable workplace injuries, wage payment violations, and even an uptick in hazardous child labor. Empowering workers through education is one of the most effective ways to protect workers, their families, and their communities. Today, there is a growing demand across the state for accessible, multilingual educational workshops on workers’ rights and leadership skills to meet Iowa’s changing needs.
For over 70 years, the University of Iowa Labor Center has been trusted by workers and their organizations to provide up-to-date, accessible information on labor and employment law, work-related policies, and leadership skills. We partner with labor, civil rights, faith-based, and service groups to deliver educational programs to over 2,500 workers each year across Iowa’s 99 counties.
Iowans believe in this resource; in 2018-2019, over 10,000 people signed petitions and attended forums to prevent a proposed closure of the Labor Center. Since then, the Labor Center’s budget has been nearly eliminated, but it continues to meet the educational needs of Iowa workers with a dedicated staff and the support of grants, sponsored programs, and individual donations like yours.
You can help! By donating to this campaign, you will help bring quality educational programs on workplace legal rights and leadership skills to Iowa’s workers, giving them the tools they need to promote safe, respectful workplaces across our state. Together we can protect and empower Iowa workers through education. Donate online, here on the GOLDrush platform. Check donations should be written to “UICA-Labor Center” and mailed to our office: Labor Center
