Young Writers Need Supplies 2017
Check out our 2018 campaign at https://goldrush.uiowa.edu/writingkits2018. We are fundraising July 25 - August 31, 2018, trying to reach our $4,000 goal. Thanks for your support!
The Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing and the Iowa Youth Writing Project (IYWP) are in need of supplies to make writing kits for young writers in the IYWP’s school-year programs. Writing kits for each student include pencils, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, markers, and a portfolio. Each kit costs approximately $10. The IYWP’s school-year workshops, serving between 250-300 students in the 2017-18 school year, will take place in schools, community centers and rehabilitation centers throughout Eastern Iowa. IYWP offers workshops for one hour each week at each of our 15-20 sites and all are free to participants. The IYWP’s innovative programming aims to educate, empower, and inspire young writers. Few supplies are needed to be a writer (pencil, paper, eraser, and pencil sharpener are the basics), but elementary, middle, and high school students do delight in having their own writing kit. The markers allow for colorful artistic expression and the portfolio provides an easy way to save the student’s work throughout the program. Students are encouraged to select their favorite work at the end of each semester to be included in a professionally designed anthology of student work. Some special supplies are needed occasionally for the IYWP’s workshops, such as candy for games, string backpacks for workshops that take students out-and-about for writing, and envelopes for mailing letters that students write. Please give $10 or $20 or more to ensure that IYWP can buy writing kits for 300 elementary, middle, and high school students for use in the weekly workshops offered at no cost during the school year.
The Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing and the Iowa Youth Writing Project (IYWP) have been working together since 2012. In our partnership, the Magid Center and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences provide space, fund the IYWP’s Director’s salary, and provide office and program supplies. IYWP’s Community Advisory Committee raises funds for additional salaries, student anthologies, the Junior High Writing Conference, Summer Camps, and Volunteer Appreciation. IYWP recruits, trains and supports the dedicated volunteers who lead our weekly workshops.
