Walk Into the Light
We are 36 University of Iowa students and are enrolled in a course called Foundations of Event Management. Each semester this course chooses a relevant cause to work with to plan and execute an event.
This semester, we have chosen an event to underscore an issue that seems to be a growing concern on campus and in our student population. Suicide and mental health awareness is a topic that is pressing and urgent to U of I students and our youth in general.
The health of our students and community is our number one priority at this time, which is why we have decided to switch our campaign to a virtual fundraiser for our Walk Into the Light’s cause. With the recent pandemic going on, the mental health in our World and community is being heavily affected. The stress and fear of all the major changes taking place, people are also facing the obstacle of anxiety, obsession and compulsions, and the increase of symptoms of depression, and even suicide. With the recent shift of social distancing and quarantining, using your resources online has become more important than ever. You can still take part and help support causes and raise awareness to one’s like ours. Although the physical aspect of the walk is not taking place, we still need support in forming a stronger community around mental health.
We are teaming with the University of Iowa Student Government to introduce a program, hatched at UW-Madison, called the Green Bandana Project.
In short, this program is a student based “training” whereby our U of I students would take Kognito training (online suicide awareness program, already in place and required for all entering freshman) and be given information to carry with them in their backpacks about campus resources for suicide/mental health.
We understand that peer-to-peer support and interactions most likely have the biggest impact on helping bring this issue to light. The students would then be given a green bandana (or piece of cloth) to tie on their backpacks. They would then become visible beacons for their peers to reach out for support and/or information on resources available on campus.
Funds donated for this cause will be used to purchase green bandanas, resource cards for students to carry in their backpacks, and event costs (that aren’t donated) for launching the project. We will hold this event this November on campus and we hope to see a sea of green!
Thank you for helping us make our campus a healthier place!!
