Fools Magazine

About Fools:

Fools Magazine is a semiannual literary, arts, and culture magazine and digital publication, founded at the University of Iowa during the summer of 2016. Fools seeks to provide a haven for some of the most restless and talented minds in Iowa City. Each semester, we publish multidisciplinary work by students from majors in English, art, business, psychology, physics, philosophy, public health, geology, and so many more. What continually brings us together is our unique collaborative process that emphasizes revision, workshopping, team-building, and learning. Since our founding, the mission has remained the same: to curate an honest narrative of our little sector of the universe. The result is an amplifying of the creative voices of the Iowa City and University of Iowa communities.

In print and online, Fools Magazine stands out for its unique dedication to writers and artists alike, for the intensity of its language and design-work, and for its insistence on making the arts accessible, especially for the Iowa City community; this is precisely why all funds go back into the organization, why all volumes are free and available to the public.

What we do:

We’ve published pieces ranging from candid interviews with renowned writers like Robin Green, to in-depth looks at the Iowa City drag queen community. We’ve made art from taxidermied mice and broken TV screens. Last semester, we collaborated for the first time with the Englert Theater to produce an on-stage literary reading and week-long art gallery installation. At a glance, Fools seems like a collage of misfit puzzle pieces, yet when you peel back the layers, each part is conceived, critiqued, curated, and cared for by every member of our organization. Part of what sets Fools apart from other publications on campus is the belief that art is better when it is made together.

Why we need your help:

Where else would $3000 dollars ensure a creative home for over 200 college writers and artists? Our fundraising goal is to ensure another year of the many things we produce, like our beautiful biannual print magazine, our ever-growing digital platform, and endless opportunities for writers and artists—like literary readings, art galleries, networking events, and masterclasses.

While we are generously funded by the Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing, the Department of English, and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, GOLDrush will allow us to open up doors for Fools members that extend past our usual publishing ventures. We have hopes of buying equipment for our team of artists, sending writers to the famous Association of Writers & Writing Programs conference, and affording to print more copies of each volume.
