UI Gardeners on campus garden project

About UI Gardeners!

The UI Gardeners organization has been running a 1/3 acre organic garden on the far-west outskirts of the University of Iowa campus since 2008. Annually we harvest nearly 1,000 pounds of fresh produce, all grown by students for students. We are committed to promoting and using sustainable growing practices, providing students with practical skills and combating food insecurity on campus. Volunteers at our garden can take as much of our harvest home with them as they’d like, and surplus is donated to the student-run Food Pantry at Iowa and the Johnson County Crisis Center.

Our garden!

While our current space has become our home over the course of many productive seasons, our organization is ready and excited to expand our reach into the community. Currently, getting to our garden requires a half-hour bus ride or an organized carpool, which greatly limits direct utilization by students and the ability of paid student garden managers to conveniently visit the space on a daily basis. It also makes coordinating our regular food pantry donations difficult and creates obstacles for students hoping to enroll in the two living-learning sciences courses taught at the garden by local expert Fred Meyer of non-profit Backyard Abundance.

Our goal!

The university has granted us a new plot of land, central to campus, where we plan to build a more accessible garden with resources such as electricity, running water and ADA-compliant concrete paths, once funds are secured. This new garden will enable us to increase our output, growing more food for more students and food insecure community members, while increasing the visibility of our efforts and opportunities for learning. The total cost of constructing this garden and its associated amenities and utilities is about $90,000, of which we have raised about $80,000 so far. We hope that this campaign will help us meet our goal soon so that we may begin construction in the coming months and grow our first crop in the new space while our current leadership is still on campus to see it.
