GROW Femineer® Wearable Technology in Iowa

The University of Iowa College of Engineering became the only Femineer® Affiliate University outside of California and started with just one school implementing the Femineer® Creative Robotics program in the fall of 2017. Since that time, we have held two more summer teacher trainings and now have Femineer® schools in Iowa and Illinois implementing the Creative Robotics module. We are ready to move to the next level!

The Femineer® Program is a teacher training program that was developed at Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering in 2013 to inspire and empower young women to pursue an education in STEM. The program engages 6th – 12th grade students through creative, hands-on activities and emulates Cal Poly Pomona’s motto of Learn by Doing. By engaging with real-world applications, Femineers® acquire the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary to become confident leaders in their future careers. The Femineer® curriculum is made up of three modules: Creative Robotics; Wearable Technology; and Pi Robotics.

Our Femineer® teachers tell us this program is a game changer. They are seeing students in their Femineer® classes that would have had no interest in becoming involved in robotics or other elective STEM activities. Femineers® reaches these students through a STEAM approach; where “A” stands for art. Students who have completed the Creative Robotics module are eager to learn more advanced foundations of electrical/computer engineering. These projects are then showcased at a Femineer® Summit held annually in the spring at the College of Engineering.

With your generous support of the Femineer® Wearable Technology module, we will be able to adopt an Iowa school to implement the program in the fall of 2020. This program needs 24 wearable technology kits/tools/supplies for a classroom of 24 students. The cost per student of this project is $225.00
