RAYS of REACH - Sally Pederson REACH Scholarship 2019
HELP US REACH OUR STRETCH GOAL OF $10,000 by Dec. 3!
Last year, the RAYS of REACH student organization, which is comprised of UI students and UI REACH students, raised $8,000 for the Sally Pederson REACH Scholarship Fund. This year, the students are trying to exceed last year's total. Help them reach their goal of $10,000 by December 3, 2019!
According to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the unemployment rate nationwide for individuals with a disability is 82 percent – a number that has steadily risen in recent years. With such high unemployment numbers among individuals with disabilities, programs like UI REACH (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes) at the University of Iowa College of Education are vital to reducing those numbers through job placement and classes on how to develop work skills.
In 2008, Sally J. Pederson, former Lieutenant Governor of Iowa, founded UI REACH after making the difficult decision to send her autistic son to a similar program in Illinois because one did not exist in Iowa. As one of the first programs of its kind at a major public university, UI REACH continues to offer courses, on-campus experiences, and career preparation to students who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to benefit from a living-learning program at a major university like the UI.
Recently, a generous donor established the Sally Pederson REACH Scholarship Fund to honor Sally for her visionary leadership. This fund is helping in the effort to close the financial gap for students who would benefit from UI REACH, but additional donations are needed from private donors and community partners to help all UI REACH students.
The RAYS of REACH student organization is utilizing GOLDrush, the University of Iowa's crowdfunding site, to raise as much money as possible to support the Sally Pederson REACH Scholarship Fund. All gifts are tax deductible, and you'll receive a tax receipt via email from the University of Iowa Center for Advancement after making your contribution.
UI REACH would not be possible without the leadership and generosity of philanthropic partners. We believe UI REACH’s best days are on the horizon and that progress will be accelerated through efforts to make the program more affordable for students and their families.
