Shouting from the Prairie: A 100th Anniversary Documentary

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts - home to the renowned Iowa Playwrights Workshop was established in 1920. For almost a century, the program has maintained a reputation as a major center for the development of new work for the theatre in the United States and internationally – a unique achievement among academic theatre programs. For this reason, the 2020-2021 academic year will be marked by a yearlong celebration in recognition of our 100th anniversary.  A season of plays by Iowa alums, a centennial celebration weekend, receptions, readings, symposia, and alumni gatherings will all be included in the festivities.

The timing is right for a comprehensive examination of this amazing journey. So, to honor our historical rite of passage we intend to create a video documentary examining the Department’s origins and its century long influence on theatre, film, and television. When finished, the documentary will be submitted to local PBS stations and entered in regional festivals. Directed by Emmy winning videographer Kevin Kelley (The Mural), the film will include historical information and imagery as well as interviews with distinguished alumni and faculty.

Out of love for the Department, Kevin, and the faculty and students involved, have waived any compensation. But there remain other costs involved in such a comprehensive project. Much of the written material is available through the University of Iowa archives and departmental resources, but the interviews will require substantial travel. And there are the additional costs of technical support, musical scoring, and post-production refinements. We need to raise at least $10,000.00 to cover those costs. Grants for this very specific type of project are few and far between, so we are turning to our alumni and friends to raise the money we need to bring about this special project. We hope you will consider contributing to the cause and help us a mark a century of achievement in a very special way. Be a part of the amazing journey!
