Hawkeye Completion Grant 2019

Our Problem

Each semester, students at the University of Iowa must pay their University Bill in order to register for classes or to graduate. But with the high cost of college, and with those costs continually increasing, some students are not able to pay their University Bills on time, leaving them at the end of the semester unable to register for classes or to graduate. On December 1, 2017, there were 504 students with a University Bill of $100-$1,500, and of those students, 63% of them were third- and fourth-year students. These shortfalls occur for various reasons, including unmet financial need. Nationally, students who do not register on time, like those 504 students, drop out of their higher education institution at a disproportionate rate compared to their peers.

Our Solution

The University of Iowa Student Government, the Office of Student Financial Aid, the Office of the Dean of Students, and Academic Support and Retention are working together to develop the Hawkeye Completion Grant, a program that will use financial aid to help students pay their University Bills so they can register for classes and graduate on time. Students with satisfactory academic progress, good non-academic conduct, and demonstrated financial need will be eligible for the Hawkeye Completion Grant. This is how it will work:

  1. Students with a past due University Bill at the beginning of registration who meet the eligibility criteria will apply for the Hawkeye Completion Grant.
  2. Staff will work with eligible students to make sure all of their resources to pay for their University Bill are reasonably exhausted.
  3. Students will work with staff to develop a plan that will help them avoid a past due University Bill in future semesters.
  4. Students receive the grant and register or graduate on time.

Our Impact

The Hawkeye Completion Grant used successful programs, like the program at Georgia State University, as a model. With over 5,000 students participating in the program at Georgia State, they have provided the support necessary to prevent thousands of students from withdrawing or leaving the institution early due to financial concerns. We hope for the Hawkeye Completion Grant to have the same impact on student success at the University of Iowa.

Your Impact

Contributions to this program will directly fund grants given to students, helping them register for classes or graduate on time. Grants will allow students to afford tuition, housing, meals, and textbooks:

  • $10.50 will cover one lunch or dinner at the Burge, Hillcrest, or Catlett Marketplaces
  • $20.60 will cover a chemistry textbook rental from the Iowa Hawk Shop for one semester
  • $156.15 will cover a used microeconomics textbook purchased from the Iowa Hawk Shop
  • $212 will cover one week worth of the room rate for a double with air in the residence halls
  • $590 will cover the average grant amount for the 504 students mentioned above

Your contributions can make the needed difference to help a student complete their undergraduate education. Thank you for supporting the students at the University of Iowa.
