Empower a Young Writer: Give the Gift of Writing Supplies
The Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing and the Iowa Youth Writing Project (IYWP) are in need of supplies to make writing kits for young writers in the IYWP’s school-year programs. Writing kits for each student include a notebook, pencils, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, markers, and a portfolio. Each kit costs approximately $10.
The IYWP's school-year weekly writing workshops will serve over 300 students in the 2018-19 school year. Each of those students needs a writing kit. The IYWP’s innovative programming aims to educate, empower, and inspire young writers. Few supplies are needed to be a writer (pencil, paper, eraser, and pencil sharpener are the basics), but elementary, middle, and high school students do delight in having their own writing kit. The markers allow for colorful artistic expression and the portfolio provides an easy way to save the student’s work throughout the program. Students are encouraged to select their favorite work at the end of each semester to be included in a professionally designed anthology of student work. Some special supplies are needed occasionally for the IYWP’s workshops, such as candy for games, string backpacks for workshops that take students out-and-about for writing, and envelopes for mailing letters that students write. Any money raised beyond $3,000 needed for school-year kits will be used for writing supplies for the annual Junior High Writing Conference and IYWP's free summer camps.
The Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing and the IYWP thank you for your generosity.
