Support Brain Cancer Research in Memory of Ann Stark

NEW STRETCH GOAL - $15,000! Help us reach our new goal of $15,000 by June 29!

Our Story

First and foremost, thank you for visiting our fundraising page to support brain cancer research at the University of Iowa. I am Steve Stark. My wife, Ann, was diagnosed with Stage IV Glio Sarcoma brain cancer in March 2016 and passed in January 2017. Dr. Varun Monga with the UI Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center not only treated her cancer, but also treated her for as good of quality of life as possible under the circumstances.

During Ann's treatment, we lived 120 miles from Iowa City, but Dr. Monga never made us feel that way. It was not uncommon for him to reply to any of our concerns for Ann in the late evenings or weekends if he felt necessary to improve her quality of life, addressing side effects she may have been experiencing, etc.

To thank Dr. Monga and remember Ann, we are raising money to support his work. I will match every donation up to $5,000. Please know that a donation at any level is greatly appreciated.

Our Goal

Ann's very rare and aggressive cancer limits being able to research via human clinical trials, but Dr. Monga's lab work can produce those rare cells to research for better treatment options in the future. The money raised through this GOLDrush campaign will serve as seed money to get research started to the point that Dr. Monga has found treatments which are providing promising results. From there, the goal is for him to request additional governmental funding that will aid him in receiving eventual approval for human use. Thanks so much for your support and for choosing to remember Ann in this way. We are deeply grateful for each and every donation. Together, we can make a world of a difference for brain cancer research. Thank you!

Brain cancer is the 10th leading cause of cancer death. Ann lived 10 months with her diagnosis.

Nearly 80,000 new cases of primary brain tumors are expected to be diagnosed this year. Approximately one-third or 32% of brain and CNS tumors are malignant.

The median age at diagnosis for all primary brain tumors is 59 years.

There are more than 120 different types of brain tumors, many with their own multitude of subtypes.

Between 1998 and 2014, there were 78 investigational brain tumor drugs that entered the clinical trial evaluation process. 75 failed. That is a 25:1 failure ratio in developing new brain tumor treatments over the past two decades. Your donation can help Dr. Monga uncover better treatment options for the future. Thank you.

Estimates of cancer patients developing brain metastases annually ranges on the low end from approximately 56,000 cases to 500,000 on the high-end. Your generous gift of $500 could help lower this number by providing Dr. Monga the opportunity to receive additional government grant requested funding for his research. Thank you so much.
