In honor of a milestone birthday, John graciously established the John Fraser Iowa Veterans Tippie Scholarship to give other Iowa Veterans a chance to encourage lifelong learning and betterment of self through higher education.

John has shared a few words about the importance of this scholarship fund:

When Iowans return from military service, one option is to begin or continue formal education at the university level. While defending their country through military service, veterans have gained both leadership and technical skills. The development of these skills typically results in assignments to highly responsible roles and enhanced maturity. Upon discharge from their military commitment, broadly experienced veterans are poised for and ready to participate in fulfilling university academic challenges.

The typical military veteran enters their formal university academic experience after spending two to five years (or more) on active duty. During their military years, their paychecks are not large, but grow steadily and without interruption. They live and work with fellow service members (20-45 years of age), most of whom have no intention of establishing a military career, and many who do.  While on active duty, it is not unusual for service members to make burdensome financial lifestyle changes earlier in their lives than their college-age counterparts (Automobile Payments, Home Mortgage, Marriage, Children, etc.).

It is clear that military veterans have both advantages and disadvantages compared to traditional university students. The intent of the Iowa Veteran’s Tippie Scholarship is to allow Iowa Military Veterans to “Try Out” the Tippie classroom. The University of Iowa and, more specifically, the Henry B. Tippie College of Business have both established and validated programs to support military veterans. The overall goal is to encourage as many Iowa military veterans as possible to “Try It”, “Like It” and ultimately graduate from The Henry B. Tippie College of Business at The University of Iowa.
