It's almost four years since Covid first disrupted our lives and we are all still getting over the impact. Things have not "gone back to normal" and it is still heavily affecting the lives of, especially, young people everywhere. As allies of and advocates for our local youth, we know that young people are agents of change and The Iowa Youth Writing Project (IYWP) serves as and arts outreach organization that uses language arts and creative thinking to empower, inspire, and engage K-12 youth in Iowa City and surrounding areas. We provide one-of-a-kind writing, publishing, and creative learning opportunities to our community’s children and teens. To ensure that all young people can participate, the IYWP provides programs at no cost, thanks to volunteers, partnerships with local organizations, and the generosity of community members. As a community-based program whose mission is to make creative writing accessible to even our youngest community members, we offer almost exclusively free programming throughout the year by working with local school districts, organizations, and businesses and connecting children and teens with volunteers of all backgrounds. The goal? Having fun through writing and expression and publishing student work. This past year, the IYWP began its fully in-person programming again with help from approximately 100 local volunteers working with over 500 K-12 students from 20 different schools by hosting writing events, regular after-school writing clubs, and other special events like author visits, open mics, and various workshops. Housed in the University of Iowa’s Magid Center for Writing, the Iowa Youth Writing Project runs thanks to a shared sense of dedication to the community, a love of writing, and prioritization of children’s sense of belonging and well-being. We are so fortunate to be in a UNESCO City of Literature and share a home with the Iowa Writer’s Workshop and now even have some of our young students returning to us as interns, volunteers, and even instructors.

Please donate to support the Iowa Youth Writing Project so that we may continue to keep our high-quality programming free and continue to expand and grow. The work we do is especially important now in its mission to serve as a resource for student writing and publishing opportunities with creativity and collaboration at its core.
